Tired of the traditional 9-to-5?
Wish you could work from anywhere like you see all the time on Instagram and TikTok?
Sick of sacrificing all your available time for little pay in return and what feels like endless restrictions of when you can take time off?
I’ve been there.
Back in 2018, I was in a 9-5 I hated, getting paid £22,000 a year for a supervisory position and just wanted to travel the world with my partner and create more from life.
Fast forward five years later and life has turned out even better than I ever could have imagined when I made my first goal of making £500 a month in my Virtual Assistant business.
Since launching my online business, I’ve helped over 450 clients create their own freedom-based business and transitioned from being a Virtual Assistant and Social Media Manager to a Business and Marketing Coach generating multiple six figures and helping my clients do the same.
In this week’s post I’m going to show you how to travel the world and make money at the same time by helping you to start your own business, too.
Because I’m not just a “special case” scenario, I didn’t get lucky… I just did the work.
My clients are quitting their 9-5s quicker than ever and hitting consistent high cash months in their coaching and service based businesses which shows you how possible this could be for you too.
All it requires is some clarity, consistency and commitment from your part.
First off, I want to address this statement/question, as it’s something that I come across a lot with new or aspiring business owners and those of you who want to quit your 9-5.
I think this is more of a mindset issue rather than a lack of skills.
Because you might think you don’t have the skills to start your own business, but in actual fact, your current career could have a bunch of transferable skills that are highly desirable in the online space.
For example, if you’re thinking of becoming a Virtual Assistant, then that job is varied and could be the right move for many of you reading this blog.
I specialised in Social Media Management because I had a marketing degree and enjoyed working on social media. But there are tech VAs, administrative VAs, those who specialise solely in content, and some get even more niche/specialised.
Even if you work in a typically corporate industry there’s space for you to switch to the self employed life and work from anywhere. The online space is full of lawyers, accountants, HR professionals and more.
So, now you can see all the opportunities that are waiting for you, let’s talk you through a few things you need to start your online business on the right track.
This is a bit of an exercise for you.
Think about your current role and all your previous job roles you’ve had and make a list of everything you did and the skills you learnt.
Then, make a list of any training or formal qualifications you have, too as these could be an in-demand skill.
You can also think about things you’re naturally good at. Maybe you’re a whiz at admin duties or are efficient and organised. You might be great with systems and tech or have a passion for social media.
These are all skills that are highly sought after in the online business space.
Next, you’ll want to consider what industry you’ll work in.
For example, if you want to become a Virtual Assistant or Social Media Manager and you have a background in the beauty industry, you may want to work for those in that industry as you already know a lot about how this niche operates.
There can be a lot of pressure on new online business owners to niche down. However, if you’re new to the online space, you might not know exactly what industry you enjoy working in just yet and that’s okay.
In that case, I encourage you to take some messy action, and try working in a couple of different niches until you find your sweet spot.
If you’re seeking more support in nailing your niche, my online coaching programme, CCA, covers exactly how to nail your niche and get crystal clear clarity on who your ideal client is.
Which brings us to step three, who you want to work with.
In the example above, I used the beauty industry as an example for your niche and in that niche, your ideal client could be female salon owners who are fully booked and looking to outsource tasks to a team so they can focus on scaling their business or taking some time off.
Get really specific when you think about who would be the absolute dream to work with.
What are their goals/aspirations? What are they struggling with right now? What are they like to work with? Some people like to work with clients that allow more creative freedom and others prefer more guidance. Think about what will work best for you here and remember it’s okay for this to evolve with time.
Once you’ve nailed this step, it’s time to start promoting yourself on social media and land your first client.
This can feel scary at first, but remember that everyone has to start somewhere and the sooner you get started, the sooner you can start reaping the benefits of having your own business.
I wrote a whole blog post on how to use attraction marketing to land clients so you can sell without feeling sleazy, but if you want some more ideas on how to get your first few clients, then I made a YouTube Video on How to Land Your First Five Clients as a Social Media Manager or Virtual Assistant.
Before I wrap up this week’s post, this is something I also wanted to address because it’s a valid fear that can crop up as a new online business owner.
Here’s my take on the “saturated” market.
Yes, there are a lot of service providers and coaches out there, but there’s also a HUGE demand for them too.
The world is shifting towards a creator economy thats’s worth $100 bilion, and more and more people are seeking support to help them scale. Whether that’s through coaching or mentorship, or as a service provider.
Even if you don’t want to work in that specific niche, there are still limitless possibilities as businesses look for ways to scale in the online space and every day thousands of business owners are starting out and seeking people like you to help them grow.
I hope this week’s post showed you that starting an online business and becoming a digital nomad doesn’t have to be a pipe dream.
