How to Become a Virtual Assistant in 2023

Several years ago, after getting a promotion at work to a supervisory role and getting a meagre pay rise of just £1000 a year, I decided that enough was enough and I quit to go travel the world. 

The moment I left I KNEW this was something I wanted to continue doing for as long as possible. 

Myself and my partner LOVED travelling, but there was one big problem…

We kept running out of money. 

I knew I never wanted to go back to my old corporate life and was searching high and low about how we could start to earn an income online so we could continue to live this dream lifestyle. 

Then I came across the role of Virtual Assistant. It was PERFECT. 

THIS is exactly what I’d been looking for. 

My own business. My own rules. Creating my own definition of freedom. 

I started my VA business, Social by Claudia and did everything in my power to make it a huge success. 

And it was. 

Three years later, I’m now a Marketing Strategist and Business Coach who helps aspiring and established entrepreneurs create their own freedom-filled life. 

And today I’m going to talk to you about how you can become a Virtual Assistant. 

What is a Virtual Assistant?

A virtual assistant is like a regular assistant except you perform your duties and are usually a contractor with several clients 

The benefits of this is that you’re in charge of the hours you work, the rates you charge and who you want to work with. 

Virtual Assistants can offer more general admin duties or, you may want to specialise and niche down a little further, for example, by becoming a Marketing VA or a Tech VA. 

The great thing is that most of you will already have transferable skills to become a Virtual Assistant.

How Much Does a Virtual Assistant Make?

The rate for a Virtual Assistant varies a lot but as a new Virtual Assistant in the online space you can easily charge £25 per hour for your services. As you become more experienced and specialise you can charge upwards of £50 per hour. 

How to Become a Virtual Assistant 

The great thing about becoming a Virtual Assistant is that you can literally get started right now for free. 

All you need is a laptop, a phone and a good internet connection. 

You’re probably thinking, “can’t I just get a remote job?”

And the answer is yes, you could…

However, nothing quite beats the true freedom that running your own online business brings. 

Here, I’ll talk you through everything you need to get set up in just three simple steps.  

Step One: Deciding on the Services you Offer

As I mentioned above, you’ll already likely have lots of transferable skills that can be really beneficial to entrepreneurs looking to hire a VA. 

For example, you may be a bit of an admin genius and have a natural talent for helping people to get organised in their business. 

You could be a tech wizz, who loves to help clients save time with the mundane tasks that could be automated like onboarding clients and sending invoices, etc. 

You might even want to offer services like Social Media Management if you have a background or expertise in marketing. 

Step Two: Picking a Niche and Ideal Client 

Next, you need to work out exactly who you want to serve as an ideal client and why. Here are some examples to get you started:

• Photographers 
• Wedding Planners
• Coaches and Online Service Providers 
• Influencers
• Content Creators 
• Hairdressers 
• Beauty Therapists 
• Estate Agents

Honestly, pretty much every industry could benefit from having a Virtual Assistant so have a think about who you’d really like to serve and what industries you have prior experience in.

Step Three: Time to Start Marketing and Landing Clients

Once you’re clear and confident on who you want to serve, you can start promoting your services and marketing them on your preferred marketing platforms.

How to Get Clients as a Virtual Assistant

Speaking of converting content, this is probably the best and easiest way to become a fully booked Virtual Assistant in no time at all. 

There are lots of ways you can gain momentum and land your first few clients as a VA; I made a YouTube video on that here. However, your content strategy is something I recommend mastering from day one. 

Content creation is an incredibly powerful FREE tool and it’s a skill that you can learn and master. All you need to do is understand what your ideal clients are currently feeling and how your offer can help them overcome these feelings and reach their desired outcome. 

This, teamed with some knowledge on buyer psychology and understanding how people make purchasing decisions online will have you signing consistent clients
